Does anyone know of any specification dealing with item balloons? I'd like to see in writing what the specs are on balloon leader lengths, angles, whether they should be shown axially on round objects, or any other pertinent information. I worked for General Dynamics, Lockheed Corp. and other aerospace firms and that's where I learned all this stuff. Now that I am a checker with Black & Decker, I need to show people where I got this information. I can't seem to find it anywhere. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Manny Silva

Another good question. Quickest answer is to say that this will be determined by your companies drafting standards. DOD-STD-100 standard and ASME Y14.2M may help but a quick glance thru them did not provide any informaton. However, David Madsen's excellent textbook "Engineering Drawing and Design" fourth edition, has some information located in Chapter 18: Identification Numbers. Size can range from .375" to 1" diameter determined by text size, all should be same size on the drawing and may end with an arrowhead, dot, slash or nothing. Leaders and extension lines types may vary but same type must be used throughout the drawing. Again, this may be an addition to your companies drafting standards and would help eliminate any further confusion.

Hope this helps!
